2007/08 EXPLORE SCIENCE SPEAKER SERIES

THIRD PRESENTATION ON FEBRUARY 28 IN 2007/08 EXPLORE SCIENCE SPEAKER SERIES

SUDBURY, ON - Water sustains all life on Earth. This year's Explore Science Speaker Series will go beneath the surface to discover how water affects our lives, and to teach us about the amazing creatures that inhabit aquatic worlds.  The third presentation of this series is scheduled for Thursday, February 28.

Oceans’ Harvest
Joshua Laughren, WWF-Canada
Thursday, February 28, 2008
7:30 p.m.

Fish from our oceans provide the main source of protein for more than 1 billion people. Commercial and recreational fishing contributes significantly to the global economy. Unfortunately, some fishing practices are also a major threat to the health of our oceans.

Originally from Greater Sudbury, Joshua Laughren joined WWF-Canada in 1997 to lead the development of the Marine Program as a key conservation program for the organization. After nearly ten years as Marine Conservation Director, in 2006 Josh took on the role of Director, Communications for the organization. His proudest moments in marine conservation include helping protect the Gully, off the coast of Nova Scotia, as a Marine Protected Area, helping move shipping lanes in the Bay of Fundy to protect endangered right whales, and helping support new legislation to protect wildlife from illegal dumping of bilge oil. While he is now more often seen working with websites than whales, his passion remains with Canada's oceans and coasts. Josh has a B.Sc. (Hon) in Biology from the University of Guelph.

Ties with Science North run in the family.  Joshua Laughren worked at Science North as a science communicator for a summer during his youth, and his father, Floyd Laughren, serves on the Board of the Science North Foundation.

World Wildlife Fund Canada (WWF-Canada) was founded in 1967 and has become one of the country's leading conservation organizations, enjoying the active support of more than 150,000 Canadians. For more information on WWF-Canada, visit wwf.ca.

The 2007/2008 Explore Science Speaker Series is sponsored by the Travelodge Hotel and CBC RadioOne, and supported by the Imperial Oil Foundation.

This year’s speaker series complements the special exhibit WaterWorks: Soak Up The Science, which opens March 1, 2008 at Science North.
